Funky Turtle rallies late to take 12-10 win

The Houghton Lake Men's Slopitch Softball League proved competitive Monday, with at least six games being decided by three runs or less.

Funky Turtle #1 improved its record to 2-0 on the season with a narrow victory over Tin Fish. Funky Turtle rallied for seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 12-8 lead. Tin Fish answered in the bottom of the frame, but only managed to score two, and the game ended 12-10.

Leading the way for Funky Turtle #1 was Kenny Koscieleci, 4- 4 with two RBIs; Tim Kraenzlein, 3-4 with two RBIs; Josh Lund, 3-4 with one RBI; and Casey Bangert, who had an inside-the-park grand slam to give Funky Turtle the lead in the seventh inning. T.J. Lorenz was the winning pitcher.

Offensively for Tin Fish, Virgil Farner was 3-4 with a double and an inside-the-park home run; John Stephens was 3-4; and Chad Curtis was 2-3. Curtis picked up the pitching loss and Tin Fish is now 2-1 on the season.

Other scores included: F & T Roofing 6, Bud light 4; Comfort Suites 13, Pressure Crack 12; Green's Tavern 7, Long Branch 6; Long Branch 12, Better Yards 9; Firehouse 28, Limberlost 5; and Shenanigan's 19, Northshore 5. Scores were not reported from Funky Turtle #2 vs. Coyles.

F & T Roofing 6, Bud light 4

F & T Roofing had a 6-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh frame and managed to hold on, though Bud light scored two runs to make it close.

Bill Jammer led the way for F & T, batting 2-3 with a three-run homer in the first inning. Rex Knorr, Richie Browne and Joe Giles all were 2-3 for F & T. Doc Bonacci was the winning pitcher.

Bill Ingleson, Lou Neff and Mark Pacella all were 2-3 for Bud light. Jim Livingston was the losing pitcher.

F & T improved to 2-0 for the season while Bud light is now 1-1.

Comfort Suites 13,

Pressure Crack 12

There was plenty of late-game drama in Comfort Suites' one-run victory over Pressure Crack. Trailing 12-7 heading into the sixth inning, Pressure Crack rallied for a big five runs in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 12 heading into the seventh. Comfort Suites scored one run in the top of the final inning off a solo home run by Chuck Woolery to take a narrow lead, and then held Pressure Crack scoreless in the bottom of the inning to grab the win.

Leading the way for Comfort Suites was Jason Aiken, 3-4 with a homer and three RBI and Tod Billman, 3-4 with a home run and two RBI. Woolery's home run in the seventh proved to be the gamewinner.

Pressure Crack had Wayne Weinrauch bat 4-4 with a homer and four RBI. Dave Blanchard Sr. was also 4-4.

Comfort Suites improved to 2-0 on the season and Pressure Crack fell to 0-2.

Green's Tavern 7,

Long Branch 6

In another close game this week, Green's Tavern came away with a one-run victory to improve to 1-1 on the season.

Tied 6-6 heading into the seventh inning, Green's scored a big run in the top of the frame and held off Long Branch in the bottom to secure the win.

The top hitters for Long Branch were Justin Brechtelsbauer, 3-4 with two RBI and Corey King, 3-4 with one RBI. Long Branch 12, Better Yards 9

The second game of the night for Long Branch turned out better than the first. Doug McRorie got the pitching victory as Long Branch tallied its first win of the season and improved to 1-2 overall.

Leading the way offensively was Brian Lucas and Josh Warner, both batting 2-3 with a home run each.

Firehouse 28, Limberlost 5

Firehouse poured on the offense in one of the few routs of the night, scoring at least three runs in all five innings of play and scoring at least six in three out of the five innings of play.

Firehouse had 32 hits to just six for Limberlost. Leading the way offensively was Greg Kauffman, 4-4; Blaine Hose, 4-4; Ricky Page, 3-4; Ryan Hoffman, 3-5; Ben Brock, 3-4; Bob Tocco, 3-5 with two homers; and Mike Mushue, 2- 3 with a homer.

Hoffman was the winning pitcher while Mike McGuire picked up the loss.

Firehouse improved to 2-0 while Limberlost fell to 1-1.

Shenanigan's 19, Northshore 5

Scott Bates led the way for Shenanigan's, batting 4-5 in the second rout of the night. Tom Blanchard was 3-5 with two doubles and Mike Mieske was also 3- 5.

Shenanigan's fell behind 1-0 after one inning, but bounced back to score five in the second to take a lead that they would not relent.

Shenanigan's improved to 1-1 on the season while Northshore fell to 0-2.
