Bucks defeat conference leader

The Roscommon Lady Bucks varsity soccer team traveled to Cheboygan May 12 for the Cheboygan Invitational, playing games against Cheboygan, Ogemaw Heights and Benzie Central and finishing in second place. The Bucks then returned home to face previously undefeated Burt Lake NMC on Monday, a game which they won 1-0.

The Bucks opened the tournament against Cheboygan and were soundly beaten, 5-0.

"The score is a bit misleading," said coach Loren Preuss. "We played them well and matched them in scoring opportunities. Their shots just ended up in the back of the net."

The Bucks tied in the second game against Ogemaw Heights, their lone goal scored by Kat Waller, unassisted.

In the final game of the tournament the Bucks played Benzie Central, defeating them 2-1. Kat Waller had her second goal of the day off a penalty kick in the first half, and Caitlyn Waller tallied the game-winner off a Brianna Williams throw-in. Danielle Clear recorded 14 saves for the game.

Good fortune struck the Bucks early in the first half when an Eagles player received a red card. Pressing the attack, Caitlyn Waller was pulled down while inside the penalty box, resulting in a penalty shot.

Kat Waller took -- and made -- the shot, scoring the game's lone goal, which would prove to be enough to secure the victory. The Bucks stepped up their defensive attack during the effort, only allowing four shots on goal for the entire game.

"This was a real team effort," said Preuss. "Any time you beat the conference leader makes for a good night."
