Recreational boating has never been safer
      Contrary to what you may be hearing from U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials lately, recreational boating has never been safer. According to the latest available statistics for 2004, more people died in bathtubs and swimming pools (847) than in recreational boats (676). Operating a boat is far safer than riding a bicycle, motorcycle or offroad vehicle.

Two arrested for resisting police
      Two people were arrested by Roscommon County Sheriff's deputies last week for resisting officers. On July 22, deputies said a 51- year-old Houghton Lake woman assaulted Deputy Dean Maeder as officers were investigating a domestic assault complaint at a home in Roscommon Township.

Theft of flowers leads to arrest
      A 49-year-old Houghton Lake man was arrested in connection with theft of a floral arrangement from a Roscommon Township resident's garage July 18. A resident told Roscommon County Sheriff's deputies the arrangement, worth $55, was taken from her garage. A witness told deputies he saw a man take the flowers.

Jogger says motorist exposed himself
      Roscommon County Sheriff's deputies are seeking an arrest warrant for a 62-year-old Houghton Lake man who allegedly exposed himself to a 16- year-old jogger July 19. The boy told deputies he was jogging on West Emery Road about 7:30 p.m. when a van pulled up to him.

Sewer board chooses firm
      The Houghton Lake Sewer Authority approved a bid Tuesday for improvement to the Houghton Lake sewer ponds. Elmer's Crane & Dozer Company, with a bid of $8,115,609, won the bid. The company's was among six bids opened July 17 for review.

Dworzynski Outing raises $15,909 for Hospice care
      The 10th annual Dick Dworzynski Golf Outing July 17 at the Grayling Country Club raised nearly $16,000 for Hospice of Michigan. Since the first Dworzynski Outing was held in 1998, the event has raised a total of $140,603 for Hospice work in Roscommon and Crawford Counties. This year's total was $15,909.05.

Bids to be opened next month for Camp Curnalia sewer
      Bids will be opened Aug. 9 for Higgins Lake's first sewer system. Lyon Township Supervisor Paul Tatro, who is chairman of the newly formed Higgins Lake Utility Authority, said bids must be turned in by Aug. 2. Construction is scheduled to begin in September, he said.

      Michigan Country Music Hall of Famer Walt Evans will open up for Stella Parton tonight (Thursday) in the Roscommon County Sheriff's Department Mounted Division's annual concert. Evans, from Saginaw, recently returned from Nashville, where he has an album in the works.

'Freshman 15' workshop Aug. 4 in Roscommon
      The MSU Extension Office in Roscommon will host a workshop on "The Freshman 15" Aug. 4 from 9:30 to noon in the Commissioners Meeting Room in the Courthouse Annex. Eating healthy during one's freshman year in college can be quite a challenge. Juggling school work with a social life can create havoc on a person's body.

Benefit dinner date changed
      Due to a scheduling conflict, a benefit dinner for the Watkins family of Houghton Lake originally scheduled for tonight (Thursday) has been changed to Saturday night. The event will still be held at the Houghton Lake Historical Village Playhouse, 1601 West Houghton Lake Dr., Prudenville. Doors will open at 5:15 p.m.

Grayling Rotary to hold barbecue
      The Grayling Rotary club will hold its annual chicken barbecue on July 28 from noon to 6 p.m. at American Legion Post 106 on the I-75 business loop in Grayling. Tickets for the event are $7 and available at the door or from any Grayling Rotarian. Proceeds are used for community projects.

      Members of the Houghton Lake Improvement Board are considering a plan to treat a 60-acre area infested with Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM) on the Middle Grounds weedbed in Houghton Lake with milfoil weevils, despite misgivings voiced by some board members.

Conference prelude to week of strike hearings
      A pre-hearing conference may have staved off strike hearings for Houghton Lake teachers suspected of striking May 3. In a Michigan Employment Relations Commission hearing in Lansing Wednesday, Superintendent Pete Injasoulian met with Administrative Law Judge Doyle O'Connor. The meeting was scheduled prior to hearings set for the week of Aug. 6.

WORKED ON BIG MAC
      As the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Mackinac Bridge nears, many of the men who made Michigan history by taking part in its construction have passed away. But Nelson Kennedy, pictured with his wife of 75 years Lela, both 95 and residents of King Nursing Centre at Houghton Lake, are still around to tell their part of the story.
