60th Au Sable Marathon starts Saturday
      The Weyerhaeuser AuSable River Canoe Marathon celebrates its 60th anniversary Saturday with a record field of 77 teams. Touted as the "Longest, Richest and Toughest Canoe Race in North America," the event involves competitors who paddle an average of 50 strokes per minute to finish the grueling race.

Family ties helps Hans & Feet go undefeated so far
      Mothers and daughters are both powerful forces of nature, and when they team up, they can be really hard to beat. That is what the Houghton Lake Women's Softball League opponents of the Hans & Feet team have found this year as they bring their family-oriented attitude to the game, as well as a roster with three mother-daughter player combinations.

KARATE TOURNAMENT RESULTS
      On July 14 the American Okinawan Karate Academy of Houghton Lake went to Washington D.C. to the KIAI Grand National Isshinryu Tournament. Ken Frederick of Houghton Lake took 1st in weapons and 1st in KIAI in Brown Belt Division. Josh Oliver took 1st in KIAI in weapons, 2nd in fighting and received an honor plaque.

Funky Turtle defeats Big Bri Music
      Funky Turtle defeated Big Bri Music 14-10 in Houghton Lake Women's Softball League action July 19. Trailing by six runs after two innings of play, Funky Turtle would roar back to score four runs in the third, two more in the fourth and six in the fifth to take a 14-9 lead. Big Bri would score one more run, but it wouldn't be enough to overtake Funky Turtle.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
      The extended-season little league all-star team practices throwing and fielding during a practice July 20. The team played their first game of the extended season on July 23, falling to Midland 13-6.

LITTLE LEAGUE ALL-STARS
      The little league extended-season all-star team, the first Houghton Lake Little League has fielded, is made up of 12 players: Six players are 7-years-old, five are 8- years-old and one is 9-years-old. The players were judged in four categories: Throwing accuracy, fielding ground balls, catching pop-ups and batting.

Tickets to watch Tigers Aug. 9 still available
      Baseball fans can watch the Detroit Tigers take on the Tampa Bay Devil Rays Aug. 9 during the Houghton Lake Little League's Detroit Tiger Fundraiser. A charter bus will leave Houghton Lake at 8:30 a.m. the morning of the game and should return between 7 and 8 p.m.

Seventeenth aced at Pineview Highlands
      Twenty-year golf veteran Bob Giesken of Chesaning scored his first hole-in-one golfing at Pineview Highlands July 15. Giesken used a pitching wedge on the 17th hole, a feat that was witnessed by Jim Mueller, Brian Suchowesky and Kano Nalor. Giesken shot an 85 for the round.

Comfort Suites' bats crack in 28-run win
      Comfort Suites only needed four innings to completely run over Pressure Crack, winning 30- 2 in Houghton Lake Men's Slopitch Softball League action Monday night. Comfort Suites scored eight runs in the first inning, three runs in the second and third innings, and an impressive 16 runs in the fourth inning.

Guns, Hoses tourney raises $480
      The annual Guns and Hoses Softball Tournament at Markey Township Field raised about $480 for the Gerrish Township Police Department-Advisory Community Team-Neighbors on Watch Shop with a Cop program July 21. In the first game of the double elimination tournament, the 9&10 News All-Stars pulled off a win over the Markey Township Fire Department in extra innings.

Bradley playing football at Heidelberg
      Derek Bradley, a 2007 graduate of Roscommon High School,will play football at Heidelberg College, Tiffin, OH, this fall. Last month it was announced that Bradley would join Heidelberg's wrestling squad, which is coached by Jason Miller, and now he's decided to join Coach Mike Hallett's football program.
