St. Helen fishing tournament a 'good day on the water'

      It started out a little chilly early Saturday morning at the boat launch on Lake St Helen. However, it did not cast a chill on those who were all fired up to get on the water. It was the third annual fishing tournament presented by St. Helen Power Sports.

      While visiting Houghton Lake this summer, 10-year-old Jacob Bauerle's persistent fishing paid off when he landed this 18-inch bass. Pictured with Jacob is his brother, Jack, 6, both from Minneapolis. Grandmother Priscilla Pando said the pair have been visiting and fishing all summer.

Youth archery tournament scheduled for Saturday
      The Cross Fire Archers 4-H Archery Club will hold its Second Annual Roscommon County 4-H Archery Tournament Saturday at the Houghton Lake Sportsmen's Club. The tourney is open to the public and all 4-H members 5- to 19- years-old. Registration starts at 9 a.m. and is $8. Clover Buds (archers 5- to 9-years-old) are $3.

Rifle introduction main topic of Sept. 8 course at club
      A National Rifle Association First Steps Rifle Course will be held Sept. 8 at the Houghton Lake Sportsmen's Club. The club will host the workshop, designed to provide beginning shooters with an introduction to the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to own and use rifles safely.
