'Cats drop soccer opener, 2-1
      The Houghton Lake varsity soccer squad fell a goal short in its 2007 debut Monday at McBain Northern Michigan Christian. Coach Scott Bockelman said his team was sluggish at the start but was able to keep McBain NMC from scoring until 30 minutes when the 'Cats allowed two goals.

CHURCH LEAGUE CHAMPS
      The Markey Community Church's Red squad took the regular season championship in the Roscommon County Church Softball League. The squad, pictured, also led the league in runs scored and home runs hit (51). In one regular season game, the Markey Red squad hit 11 home runs.

Thompson shoots hole-in-one
      Pineview Highlands Golf Course recorded a hole-in-one Aug. 16 during the Thursday Night Men's League. Justin Thompson, 18, Houghton Lake, made the shot on hole No. 14, a 130-yard hole, using a pitching wedge. It was his first ace.

      Soul's Harbor edged out Markey Community Church's Red team in the Roscommon County Church Softball League Tournament Aug. 7. Soul's Harbor edged the regular season champs, 13-12. Pictured are members of the Soul's Harbor team.

New season means new look for 'Cats
      "Whatever it takes." "Count on me." Those are the mottos of the Houghton Lake Bobcats as they enter the 2007 gridiron season with a new offense and a new coach. The 38 Bobcats on the varsity squad are under the guidance of Floyd Carter, who replaced Aaron Seiser after Seiser left the position earlier this year to coach his hometown Gladwin Flying G's.

      With volleyball and girls golf featured in the fall sports previews, it is apparent that something has changed. Girls' basketball is not being played and the boys are not hitting the golf course.

      Although Roscommon High School Varsity Football Coach Don McKindles said he doesn't have the depth he's had on his Buck football teams in recent years, he will be fielding a solid group of starters this season.

Buck soccer goals remain high
      Last year was a special one for Roscommon High School's varsity soccer team, which fought its way to the Division 3 State Final against Richmond. And although the team lost many of its senior stars, including All State players Dane Carey, Peter Kidd and Shane Hill, they are still setting high goals for themselves.

      Following a parade of short-time Houghton Lake High School varsity volleyball coaches, new Coach Laura McNeill, a 2000 graduate of Houghton Lake High School, is taking the long view as she prepares her Bobcats for the fall season.

Bockelman sees defense as Bobcats' soccer strength
      The Houghton Lake High School varsity soccer team will look to improve on last year's 5-13- 1 record in Coach Scott Bockelman's second year at the helm. The 'Cats lost four seniors off last year's squad and will have to replace all of their forwards and most of their midfielders, which Bockelman said could pose problems, especially early in the season.

Golfers look forward to 'new' season
      Moving from the spring to the fall has been a nice change for the Roscommon High School girls' golf squad. Coach Carole Ostling said her team is enjoying the change, which has allowed them to work on their skills during the summer and begin their season at the course - rather than the hallways at the high school.

G-H drops ski team, imposes costs on athletes, Bucks fans
      Roscommon High School's 2007- 08 athletic schedule will be minus one sport, athletes in other sports will pay a fee for transportation to away games and adult season passes for Bucks events will cost more.

Big Bri knocks off Shenanigan's heading into final position game
      Shenanigan's Pub survived a threat to their perfect season record Aug. 9th by one run but a week later in the last regular season game Shenanigan's fell 8-7 to Big Bri Music in Houghton Lake Women's Softball League play. Shenanigan's built a 3-0 lead in the first two innings but Big Bri came out swinging in the third inning and scored three runners.

      Although this year's Roscommon High School varsity volleyball team has many new faces, Coach Heather Compton is excited about their prospects for success in both Jack Pine Conference and state tournament action.

Houghton Lake lures back Grand Ledge swim team
      Dodging choppy waves and enduring cool water temperatures, the Grand Ledge Swim Team returned to Houghton Lake the morning of Aug. 16 to prepare for its 2007-08 season. Staying at Bob Fedewa's place on Long Point, 28 members of the team practiced three days for their season which began earlier that week.

      Battling their way through the loser's bracket, the West Houghton Lake Campground team (a.k.a. Swankie's Pub) won the Houghton Lake Budweiser Classic this past weekend.

F& T claims league title
      For 13 teams in the Houghton Lake Men's Slo-Pitch Softball League the season is finished, but not so for Comfort Suites and the Firehouse squads. Both teams finished with the same number of losses, three, so they will have another playoff game.
