Burnside RV becoming 'premiere' facility up north

Burnside RV Center - Camping World Burnside RV Center - Camping World Burnside RV of Houghton Lake will get a facelift, a new building

and a new name under plans announced last week.

Camping World is joining forces with Burnside RV, currently located in Houghton Lake and Gaylord, to expand the Houghton Lake store. Part of the expansion plan is to consolidate the locations with the Gaylord location closing soon.

What will come out of the consolidation and construction is Camping World RV Sales of Northern Michigan with 4,500 square foot of retail space and a newly constructed 12,000 square foot service building at Burnside RV's current Houghton Lake location. The current showroom will be remodeled while the service building will be constructed on the property. Plans also include a Camping World Collision Center located on Towerhill Road in Houghton Lake.

"We are very excited about this collaboration." said Mike Burnside, general manager. "Northern Michigan is the epicenter for the outdoor lifestyle and we are proud to position ourselves as the premiere one-stop shopping destination. The Houghton Lake area boasts a rich cultural history and is recognized for 32 miles of beautiful shore line including 22,000 acres of sandy bottom water. It serves millions of travelers who enjoy the numerous outdoor activities such as fishing, boating and off-road vehicle trails. It's a sportsman's paradise."

Burnside said they are planning to have the expansion finished by March and it will be "business as usual" during the construction.

He said the expansion will also create six jobs in the Houghton Lake area.

"It's a good thing," he said, noting the store will have a better selection and more inventory.

It will be the third Camping World location in Michigan and while company officials say demand is partially satisfied by Camping World locations in Belleville and Grand Rapids, the company has determined that this market has considerable growth potential and is moving to meet it. There are a significant number of visitors traveling to and through the area to recreation destinations including the Upper Peninsula that the location will serve as well as the Traverse City area, which is also a major tourist destination.

"The new Camping World of Northern Michigan will feature a full array of new products and offerings to meet the demands of the ever changing RV and outdoor market," said Camping World Regional Vice President Roger Anderson. "It will be Camping World's premiere Northern Michigan facility serving a wide range of the latest, most innovative RV and outdoor accessories."
