Community Services Officer Tpr. Scott Bates of the Michigan State Police, Houghton Lake Post, hands out pencils to Brenden Ingleson and Mattie Ferguson, second graders in Mrs. Diane Rustad's and Mrs. Julie Krause's classes, for them to distribute to their classmates. He had just completed a safety lesson Oct. 26, during "Red Ribbon Safety Week." Tpr. Bates instructed all Collins Elementary students on the "Big 5" safety rules: Never go with a stranger, never ride in a car without a seat belt, never put anything in your mouth that will hurt you, never touch or play with a gun, and never let anyone touch you who scares or hurts you or makes you feel uncomfortable. The children also received Halloween safety tips and free candy bags.
