Ella Mildred Nelson

Ella Mildred Nelson, 91, longtime resident of The Dalles, OR, and former Houghton Lake resident died at her home Dec. 8, 2007.

A service was held Dec. 13 at Zion Lutheran Church. Private family burial was in Threemile Cemetery.

Mrs. Nelson was born in Twin Valley, MN, Sept. 23, 1916, the 15th child of 16 children, to Andrew and Anna (Natwick) Rude. She grew up on her parents’ farm and graduated from Twin Valley High School.

She moved to Houghton Lake, where she met and married Frederick “Fred” A. Nelson in 1937. After living there and in Minneapolis, MN, they moved to The Dalles in 1973. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church for 34 years, and spent time volunteering at the Mid Columbia Medical Center, Meals on Wheels and Cancer Concern. Although she worked outside the home when she was younger, her main interest was being a homemaker.

Mrs. Nelson enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren, having family members over for dinner, crocheting afghans, listening to baseball games, traveling, Birthday Club dinners and Red Hat Society luncheons.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Fred Nelson, and her siblings.

Surviving are her son, Terry and his wife Bette Nelson of The Dalles; daughter, Barbara Jacobsen of Chicago; three grandchildren, Amy and her husband Pat Graham of Hood River, OR, Travis and his wife Katie Nelson of The Dalles, and Holly Belcher of The Dalles; six great-grandchildren, Savannah Graham, Tyler Belcher, Erin Nelson, Madison Graham, Colton Belcher and Molly Nelson; cousins, Jarl and Herman Natwick; sister-in-law Audrey Nelson Alton of Houghton Lake; and many nieces and nephews of Houghton Lake.
