Village hires contractor to keep sidewalks clear

Pedestrians will have an easier time making their way along Roscommon's main thoroughfares as a recent decision by the village council to hire a contractor to keep sidewalks clear of snow.

The council hired Higgins Lake Landscaping to clear sidewalks along Lake (M-18) and Fifth (I-75 business loop and I- 75) Streets within the village. The firm also will sweep sidewalks twice during warmer seasons. Village Clerk Kathy Murphy said the $13,500 cost will come from the village general fund.

The council will meet in special session Jan. 4 to discuss procedures for narrowing a field of 20 applicants for village manager.

Dec. 27 was the deadline for applications. Advertisements stated the village was seeking either a full-time or part-time manager. A council committee recommended advertising for a manager who would work 24 to 28 hours per week. However, some council members felt advertisements for a part-time manager might not attract qualified applicants.

Murphy has been spending about 20 hours per week on managerial duties in addition to her work as clerk since Village Manager W. Michael Freer resigned in July.
