Come to Tip-up Town

Tip-up Town 2008 is finally here! Unlike last year, visitors will be treated to large amounts of snow and cold, apropos for Houghton Lake's 58th winter carnival. Traditional events such as the Grand Parade, ice fishing contest and Polar Bear Dip will be complemented with new events like broomball, a "Wacky Clothes Race" and CB Slide. More...

Houghton Lake Middle School fifth graders Courtney Lee (behind counter, left) and Julia Hallauer and seventh grader Sarah Bromm talk with some customers of their school store Jan. 11. After receiving permission from Principal Susan Tyer and Librarian Sue Leedy, the girls ordered merchandise from catalogs to sell. Located next to the library, the store is open every lunch period until the end of the month. The students also sell raffle tickets for a Wal-Mart gift card. Houghton Lake High School art students met a request by the Houghton Lake Merchants Association by creating nearly 60 colorful posters featuring Houghton Lake and Tip-up Town. Art teacher Elaine Zobro said the posters will be placed in empty store fronts to add color and life to the area. Some do not display dates and will be usable for future Tip-up Towns.
