Batko lifts his way into record book

Houghton Lake's Bob Batko is again in the record books.

Batko, 62, broke three American Drug Free Power Lifting Federation state and American records Jan. 26 in Six Lakes, MI. Lifting at 181 pounds in the unequipped division, Batko sqatted 352.50 pounds, breaking the state and American record. He also bench pressed 203.70 pounds and dead lifted 446.20 pounds, breaking the state and American record. In total, he lifted 1,003 pounds to set another state and American record.

Batko lifted in the unequipped division for the first time, meaning only a lifting belt and wrist straps are allowed to be used. After a few recent injuries, Batko said the division felt safer to him.

Batko will next be lifting in the state championships April 26 in Lansing.
