National Library Week celebrated at Houghton Lake Public Library
      National Library Week, a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country, has been happening every April since 1958. Houghton Lake Public Library Director Donna Alward said the library continues its tradition of celebrating this special week, April 14-19, in a very big way.

      The Richfield Township Library Board and the Friends of the Richfield Township Library will host an open house April 19 during the library's regular hours, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The library is at 1410 North St. Helen Road, St. Helen.

'Getting older, getting better' topic of author's talk April 22
      The Houghton Lake Public Library will host a presentation by nationally known speaker, motivator and author, Maureen Burns, April 22 at 11 a.m. Described as a "warm and witty speaker," Burns will share practical tools on aging with enthusiasm, fun and fulfillment. Space is limited and registration is required.

GIVING
     Bob Collison, Houghton Lake, donates blood as American Red Cross Nurse Janet Michael tends to him during a blood drive at St. John Lutheran Church Monday. He was one of 61 donors who donated blood. Coordinator Kathryn Hall said of those participants, 54 were productive donors, exceeding the goal of 50. There were three new donors this month. The youngest donor was 17, and the oldest was in his 80's. Receiving recognition were: John Burnett, eight gallons; Sandy Egbers, five gallons; Eldona Doll, three gallons; Catherine Aisthorpe and Mary Collison, two gallons; and Carie Heise, one gallon. Prudenville resident Jim Newcomb and Houghton Lake resident Dan Stouffer reached the 12-gallon milestone. Hall said Wal-Mart was also on hand to offer free vision screenings and orange juice. The next blood drive is scheduled for June 9. (CHP)

Democrats to meet Friday evening
      The Roscommon County Democrats will hold their monthly meeting tomorrow (Friday) at 7 p.m. A new chair, Sam Boodoian Jr. of Higgins Lake, will run the meeting following elections held last month. Kathy Paradowicz of Roscommon was elected co-chair while Frank Peshick of Houghton Lake is secretary/treasurer of the party.

Eagles' Relay for Life team hosting breakfast Sunday
      The Houghton Lake Eagles Aerie 3201 Relay for Life team is sponsoring an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast Sunday. The breakfast will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with pancakes, sausage, bacon, orange juice, applesauce and coffee or milk on the menu. Tickets are $4 for adults and $1.50 for children under 10 in advance and $5 for adults and $2.

Garden club to meet April 21
      The Kirtland Garden Club will meet April 21 at 1 p.m. at Markey Community Baptist Church. The speaker will present a demonstration on the preparation of herbal soaps. Call Carol for reservations at 366-4427. Guests are welcome.

      Roscommon County Republicans will meet April 22 at the Markey Township Hall. A representative from U.S. Representative Dave Camp's office will be the featured speaker. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. and refreshments will be served.
