Bobcats' offense returns in 3-0 win over Grayling

The Houghton Lake offense found its mark Tuesday night as the varsity soccer squad beat Grayling 3-0 in a non-conference match at Grayling.

After being held scoreless in their last four games, the Bobcats peppered Grayling with 25 shots on the evening to pick up the victory. The Bobcats had 12 shots on goal in the first half and 13 in the second.

Coach Scott Bockelman said it was a "well played game" and that his Bobcats moved the ball " to all positions on the field" in the win.

The Bobcats went up 1-0 on a long free kick goal by Kayla Hires that went over the keeper's head 27 minutes into the first half. Two minutes later, the Bobcats added to the lead when Kristin Bockelman assisted Hires on her second goal, a long shot that bounced over the keeper's head.

In the second half, the Bobcats added their second goal off a cross pass by Bockelman to freshman Katie Trahan, who scored her first varsity goal.

Bockelman said his defense stepped up throughout the game, limiting Grayling to only one shot on goal. Leading the defense was defensive midfielder Brittany Manifold, Bockelman said. He also said sweeper Jamie Bechtel had a "nice game controlling the backfield and stopping Grayling's offense with timely clears and tackles."

The Bobcats continue play tonight (Thursday) at Roscommon. They host Cheboygan May 5 and Clare May 6.
