Hazardous waste collection scheduled next month
      The first Roscommon County household hazardous waste Day collection of 2008 is scheduled for June 7 in the parking lot of the Roscommon County Health and Services Building on M-18 at M- 157 near Prudenville. Hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Program to focus on living with MS
      On May 17, a multiple sclerosis informational program will be presented in Gaylord from 9:30 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. Louise O'Donnell, MSN, will speak about "Your Health Care, Your Relationship, Your Responsibility." After Ms. O'Donnell's session, there will be a choice between two sessions offered at the same time.

QUEEN'S FUND-RAISER
      Queen's Team leader, Tip-up Town Queen 2008 Jacci Dankert, with the help of "Tip," the TUT mascot, will host a Relay for Life fund-raiser May 30 starting at 7 p.m. at Northway Lanes, Houghton Lake. Cost is $20 per team (cash only), which covers three games of Scotch doubles, pizza and shoes, if needed.

      The Northwest Michigan Human Service Agency will host a workshop on the topic of foreclosures May 20. The program is for anyone who is in foreclosure, who is behind in their mortgage payments and facing the possibility of foreclosure, or for anyone who knows of someone in these predicaments.

St. John sponsoring food give-away
      A food give-away will be held Saturday starting at 9:30 a.m. at the Houghton Lake Senior Center, behind Pines Theatre on Townline Road. St. John Lutheran Church, in conjunction with Project Help Our People Eat, is sponsoring the giveaway. Those attending are asked to bring boxes to carry food.

BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR RIVER HOUSE
      Roscommon Middle School seventh grader Bekah Bacus hosted a birthday bash May 4, but instead of presents for herself, she asked that gifts be donated to River House Shelter, Grayling. "We had an amazing turn out for Bekah's Party," Bacus' mom, Kelly, said.

Polkatowners slated May 18 at Playhouse
      Dancers can again enjoy the music and atmosphere at the Houghton Lake Historical Playhouse when the Polkatowners come to town May 18. The dance will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. and feature Pan Franek and the Polkatowners. Cost is $10 per person.

Arnie's to host 'Amazing Race' casting call
      Arnie's Arts and Crafts of Houghton Lake will again host a CBS casting interview- this time the store will welcome couples interviewing for a part in the 14th season of the TV show, "Amazing Race." Two-member teams may stop at Arnie's parking lot May 23, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. At this point, Arnie's is the only location in Michigan for interviews.

HISTORY LESSON
      Members of the Houghton Lake Kiwanis Club learned about Houghton Lake history from members of the Houghton Lake Area Historical Society at their April 30 meeting. Agnes Feldman and Jane Radulski presented information on the history of buildings at the society's village and displayed clothing and artifacts to the group.

      The Kirtland Garden Club will meet at Bart's Fruit Market, Prudenville, May 19 at 10 a.m. Members will learn about the newest plants for the year and watch a planter arrangement demonstration. Lunch will follow at Booner's.

Transportation authority to host open house, offer chance to win rides
      In recognition of National Transportation Week, the Roscommon County Transportation Authority will be giving away free rides to a few lucky riders, and hosting an open house, where the "employee of the year" will be announced.

Weather spotter courses slated at Merritt, Higgins fire halls
      The National Weather Service in Gaylord will present two Severe Weather Spotter Safety Courses in the area next week. The classes are free, open to the public and last about two hours. The program provides details about how to become a weather spotter and how to make a complete report to the National Weather Service.
