Gerrish Township Police are investigating a personal injury accident that occurred June 24 near Higgins Lake that resulted in a six-year-old boy being airlifted to a Grand Rapids hospital. Although the Fourth of July is a week away, holiday celebrations in Roscommon County begin this weekend in St. Helen. Kicking off the Independence Day festivities will be a fireworks display at the Richfield Township Airport in St. Helen at dusk June 28. After years of calling for- and sometimes helping to pay for- modifications to the Cut River dam, some members of the Higgins Lake Property Owners Association are wondering aloud if the dam should be there at all. More than $240,000 in cuts, affecting students and employees at all four Gerrish-Higgins Schools, were approved by the district's board of education as part of its 2008-09 budget June 18. Even with the cuts, the district's general fund budget shows a $497,292 deficit. More...

Not all the financial news was bad for the Gerrish-Higgins School District last week. Dr. Millie Mellgren, superintendent, told the district's board of education June 18 that $15 million in building and site bonds were sold June 12, with interest expenses more than $1 million below projections. Kelsey McIntosh, 8, of Flint plays at Truman Gardner Park in Markey Township recently as volunteers and township employees install new play equipment. Judge Michael Baumgartner presided in 34th Circuit Court, Roscommon, June 17: Todd M. Baden, 42, St. Helen, pleaded guilty to probation violation and was sentenced to 90 days in jail with credit for three days, $150 in costs and a $100 attorney fee. He was discharged from probation without improvement. If he pays his court assessments, he will be given 15 days credit. More...

Bottle petition
A petition drive started in Michigan Monday by the Michigan United Conservation Clubs (MUCC) to ask the legislature to expand the state's bottle bill to include plastic beverage containers for water and other non-carbonated beverages.
