Planes and people
      (Above) Planes and people gather at the Houghton Lake Airport Saturday for a fly-in sponsored by Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 1259, Roscommon County. The fourth annual event raised over $1,500 for the chapter, which will use the money for airport and hangar improvements according to Past President John Brusseau.

WCMU Straits cruises continue
      Members of the WCMU staff are hosting the public broadcasting stations' annual series of Music Cruises on the Straits of Mackinac. The two-hour cruises feature a sunset ride under the Mackinac Bridge, live performances from Michigan musicians and hearty hors d'oeuvres provided by Audies of Mackinaw City. Tickets are $40 per person, per cruise, or $110 for all three.

Bike tour to accompany Au Sable Canoe Marathon
      The bicycle riders of the Black Bear Bicycle Tour will chase the canoes in the 61st Weyerhaeuser AuSable River Canoe Marathon from Grayling to Oscoda July 27. At 8 a.m. the first bicycles will depart downtown Grayling to travel to Oscoda. Riders may go fast or slow.

'Mile by Mile on I-75' offers up fascinating facts about Michigan
      Former Houghton Lake resident Leslie Mertz has written a book about driving along the I-75 corridor, "Driving Michigan: Mile by Mile on I-75." Published May 28, 2008, by Arbutus Press, Traverse City, the 320-plus page book challenges travelers on the I-75 freeway to engage their curiosity as the scenery goes by.

HELPING FIGHT CANCER
      Pat Kronberg of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Roscommon County spoke to the Rotary Club of Houghton Lake about her battle with cancer and plans for the Relay For Life at Bobcat Field. Interact President Molly Collins presented a check for $100 from the HLHS Interact Club and Past-President Debbie Banks presented a check for $1,000 from the Rotary Club.

      Houghton Lake resident Jesse Bolan has published a print-ond emand book, "Dream Shaper." Available at www.publishamerica. com for $16.95, Bolan's story is about a 17-year-old boy, Ricky, who starts to have nightmares about his late mother, who was the ruler of the dream world.

Farmers' Market open Fridays at Houghton lake
      A Farmers' Market is open on Fridays on the grounds of the Houghton Lake Area Historical Village in Prudenville. The market is open from noon to 6 p.m. on Fridays through October. Michigan grown products, including fruits, vegetables, plants and wood products, are featured. The village is at 1701 West Houghton Lake Dr. (M-55).

Historical society meeting July 15
      The Houghton Lake Area Historical Society will hold its general membership meeting July 15 at the Historical Playhouse. The 7 p.m. meeting is open to anyone interested in learning about and promoting the history of Houghton Lake. Volunteers interested in helping with the group's Village Days, Aug. 1-3, also may attend.

      The sixth annual "Coats for Kids" will be held July 14-18 at the Houghton Lake PAKMAIL store. PAKMAIL is taking 10% off UPS and FedEx shipping, not including packaging. All proceeds will be donated to the "Coats for Kids" foundation run by UPS/Ed Charities.

      Gerrish Township's Advisory Community Team- Neighbors on Watch will host its annual meeting and picnic July 21 at 6 p.m. at the Gerrish Township Hall gazebo. Meat and beverages will be provided. Guests are asked to bring a dish to pass, their own table service and lawn chairs.

      Children living at and visiting Houghton Lake now have some expert advice on where they can find the "Best of Houghton Lake for Kids by Kids." The Houghton Lake Public Library recently published the kids' guide to Michigan's "other great lake.

NEW PAVILION

Art center offers classes for kids
      The Roscommon Art Center is offering classes to school age kids beginning July 17. "They will have an overall introduction to art and concepts, beginning with colors, progressing to painting, paper mache, tie-dying, and a wide range of other art forms," announced Diana Guy, assistant director of the center.

      Due to incorrect information provided to the Resorter, the date of the Higgins Lake Stewardship Program's greenbelting seminar was wrong in a story in last week's edition. The seminar will be held July 12 at the Gerrish Township Hall.

      The 30th annual Arts & Crafts Festival sponsored by the Gladwin Council of Arts will be held in the Gladwin City Park, 240 City Park St., off Cedar Avenue between the Gladwin County Sheriff's Department and Courthouse July 12 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Classic cars coming to Gladwin
      The Gladwin Business and Professional Association is sponsoring a classic car show on July 12 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church parking lot, 211 East Cedar Ave. Registration is from 9 a.m.- noon, with awards given at 2:30 p.m. Car dash plaques will be given to the first 70 vehicles.       The Crawford-Roscommon Conservation District is inviting conservation related groups and nature crafters to participate in its third Conservation Expo. The Sept. 13th event will be held at the Houghton Lake Historical Playhouse. The public and private conservation groups can answer questions, distribute promotional items and sell nature items to the public.

'Looking Down' exhibit shows work of Thorton at MMCC
      Mid Michigan Community College's Community Learning Center, which is in the Charles A. Amble Library on the Harrison Campus, is hosting the paintings and photography of artist Bill Thornton through July. Thornton resides and works in his studio outside Mt. Pleasant. The exhibit, entitled "Looking Down," focuses on how objects become part of their environment.

Michigan author to visit Saturn Booksellers
      Ada resident Michael Lindley, author of two books set in the Charlevoix area, will visit Saturn Booksellers in downtown Gaylord Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lindley's novels, "The Seasons of the Emma Lee" and "On Past Horton's Creek," are set in both the past and present. Their stories are of conflict between full-time and summer residents of the resort town.
