'Night of destruction,' midway championships entertain fans

      With anticipation of bent metal and paint trading, the Soaring Eagle Winged Outlaw Late Models set a new air to the July 3 show. People wondered why they paid for a seat as they stood in awe as 16 of the winged warriors took to the track for time trials with David Hilliker of Midland setting the bar at 12.12 seconds.

Latone's grandchildren pursue Olympic dream

      Ryan and Megan Latone, grandchildren of Stanley and Mary Ann Latone of Houghton Lake, were part of a quest for the Olympic dream last week. The brother-sister swimmers raced in a series of qualifiers (many televised) for the U.S.A.'s Olympic swim team that will compete in Beijing, China, later this summer. The trials were held in Omaha, NE, June 30 through July 6.

KEEPING IT ROLLING
      Roscommon County Community Foundation Executive Director Mary Fry (right) presents Houghton Lake Little League President Jim Garrett with a check for $8,000 to help keep the Graham/ McDonald Sports Complex project going Monday. Fry said the money came from the Ryan McDonald Memorial Fund, which now has less than $1,000 left in it with more work to complete.

Football camp for grades 9-12 to begin July 14
      A summer football camp for students in grades 9-12 will take place July 14-17 at the Houghton Lake High School practice field behind the high school. The camp will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and will cost $30. Each participant will receive a T-shirt and will learn football fundamentals, including passing, kicking, punting, receiving and line play.

F & T beats Monsters to post second softball win in a row
      F & T Roofing made it two wins in a row with an 11-10 victory over Monsters Monday night in Houghton Lake Men's Softball League action. Joining F & T in the win column Monday night was Green's Tavern, Budweiser, Booner's, Coyles, Long Branch and Funky Turtle I.

      AJD Forest Products left fielder Vikki Blanchard snags a short fly after a very long run for an out against Team Hodges last Thursday evening. Blanchard also went 3-4 at the plate during the 17-9 AJD win.

Mikey's Girls tops G's in women's softball action
      In the only game report filed for the Houghton Lake Women's Softball League, Mikey's Girls- Beloved Dreamz beat G's Pizza 14- 5. Amber Karol picked up the pitching win while Danielle Parks was the winning catcher. Katie June took the loss for G's.
