Monsters collect third defeat from Pressure Crack 13-11
      The Monsters defeated Pressure Crack 13-11, Monday night to sweep their three-game season series in Houghton Lake Men's Softball League play. Only four teams reported their games, Budweiser uncorked on Coyles 17-8 with seven of their runs coming in the 7th inning. In the Limberlost 18-6 victory over F & T it was a nine run 3rd inning that doomed F & T.

      Fifty-eight football players are spending this week at the Bobcat Summer Football Camp improving their gridiron skills under the guidance of Floyd Carter (pictured) and his Houghton Lake High School football coaching staff.

Fire House burns Lures in fast pitch
      Action in the St. Helen Men's Fast-Pitch Softball League July 13 saw Fire House defeat Lures Restaurant 15-2. Kenny Koscielecki had four hits with two doubles. Brian Lucus had 3 hits, Jon Rieger, and Toby Rushing had two hits with a homerun for each. Josh Rowland, Eric Desnyder and Josh Bennett each had 2 hits.

Lightfoot aces Pineview 14th
      Gary Lightfoot of Higgins Lake sank a hole-in-one at Pineview Highlands July 1, almost a year to the date since his last ace. Lightfoot used a 5-iron on the 185-yard 14th hole to sink the shot. It was witnessed by Bob Russon, Tom Westgate and Bob Bishop.

HELPING FUND LUPUS RESEARCH
      The team put together by Dallas Carll and Don Gibbons won the Second Annual Co-Ed Softball Tournament for Lupus research June 21 at Houghton Lake. The event raised over $1,000, doubling the amount raised last year. Organizer Lindsay Kelly thanked everyone who donated and helped with the tournament, including her family for their "help and support.

Bobcat Boosters to hold planning meeting July 20
      The Houghton Lake Bobcat Boosters will hold a planning meeting July 20 at Booner's Food Plot and Watering Hole, Prudenville. The meeting will begin at 5 p.m. and focus on planning and deciding which fundraising activities the Boosters will pursue during the upcoming year.

Speed Show begins at Lake City Arena
      The North Country Barrel Racing Association has begun a new professional Speed Show series at the Lake City Arena held on Wednesday evenings in July. Due to rain, the first show was held July 9 and featured three riders from Houghton Lake. Competitive events for cash prizes included goat tying, pole bending and barrel racing.

Navigator charges back to win 15-12 over Shenanigan's
      Navigator Wireless came from behind to defeat Shenanigan's 15-12 in the Houghton Lake Women's Softball League action Thursday night. In the only other game reported Spikehorn Bar cooked G's Pizzeria 15-6.

McLaughlin, Kelsey each ace White Deer eighth
      Tena McLaughlin and Fran Kelsey each scored an ace recently at White Deer Country Club. McLaughlin, Prudenville, scored her first hole-in-one July 11 golfing at White Deer Country Club. McLaughlin used a 7-iron to ace hole #8 from 110 yards. Gail Kukuk and Connie Davis witnessed the shot.

Stock car drivers aiming to take 20th 'Wood Tic' title at Merritt
      Merritt Speedway celebrates the 20th Annual "Wood Tic," a tribute to the logging industry and one of the largest stock car races in the state July 18th and 19th. During this two-day outing, all types of events are scheduled including the Martin Hutchinson Band Friday night, a free children's carnival on Saturday afternoon and racing both evenings.

Jaguar football camp set to begin July 22
      A football camp run by Houghton Lake High School Head Football coach Floyd Carter, for students entering grades 3-8, will take place July 22-24. The camp for Houghton Lake Youth Football Jaguars will take place at the HLHS practice field, behind the high school. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and costs $50.

Academic honor roll award goes to Albion's Gulledge
      Cat Gulledge, a graduate of Roscommon High School, is one of 106 Albion College scholar-athletes who have been named to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Academic Honor Roll. Gulledge is a member of the women's cross country and track & field team at Albion.

T-ball medals available at Camping World
      Houghton Lake Little League tball players can pick up their medals from this past season, which ended last month, at Camping World of Northern Michigan (formerly Burnside RV). T-ball players are the only group to be given medals this season as the money usually used for medals was instead directed toward field improvements at the Graham/McDonald Sports Complex.

ALL STAR SOFTBALL SQUAD
      The Houghton Lake Girls Softball 11-12- year-old All Star squad recently finished their season with four games at Tawas. The squad lost to Tawas, West Branch, Otsego County and Alpena but Coach April Garrett said it was a "learning experience" for the girls. It was the first year the team competed in the all stars.

Houghton Lake All Stars advance, then fall in district quarterfinals
      After advancing to the Little League World Series Michigan District 8 Quarterfinal last week, the Houghton Lake 9-10 All Star team suffered a season ending loss Sunday to Boyne City. The squad, coached by Jon Cohee, Dan Kubiak and Jim Schneider, won their last game in District 8 pool play to advance to the quarterfinals.
