Long Branch sluggers win two
      Several close contests made action exciting Monday night in the Houghton Lake Men's Softball League. Long Branch won two contests while Monsters, Budweiser, Funky Turtle I and Limberlost all added victories.

     Houghton Lake High School Football Coach Floyd Carter leads a drill Tuesday during the Houghton Lake Youth Football Jaguar football camp. Players in grades three through eight attended the three-day camp. Carter was assisted by Jim Gerdes, Dan Balbach, Leonard Natkowski and several varsity players from the high school team. (CHP)

Navigator rips Limberlost in women's action
      Navigator Wireline whacked Limberlost while Beloved Dreamz/Mikey's Girls beat Funky Turtle in Houghton Lake Womens Slo-Pitch Softball League action last Thursday. Navigator scored in all five innings to win its contest with Limberlost, 16-1.

Mother Nature steals show at 20th annual Wood Tic
      On July 18, 49 Super Late Models started the weekend off qualifying at the home of Michigan's fastest dirt track, Merritt Speedway. With warm temperatures and partly cloudy skies, fans watched with excitement as Donnie Marcoullier of Houghton Lake set fast time at 14.63 seconds.

AT IT AGAIN
     Holly Roberts was using four-pound test line when she hauled in a 19 1/2-inch, 3 pound, 10-ounce hawg while fishing on Houghton Lake with her father, Gary, July 18. Chesaning woman aces at Pineview
      Pam Hunt of Chesaning shot a hole-in-one at Pineview Highlands Golf Course, Houghton Lake, July 22. Hunt's 100-yard ace was on hole No. 17. She used a nine iron. The hole-in-one was witnessed by Scott Dowd of Holland. Hunt and Dowd were vacationing at Houghton Lake.

Rose credited with hole-in-one
      Charlie Rose of Houghton Lake shot a hole-in-one July 19 at White Deer Country Club. The ace was on hole No. 13, a 139-yard par 3 hole. Rose used a 6-iron. The shot was witnessed by Bob Brotebeck, Mike O'Neil and Dexter Wilson.

Multi-Agency partnerships protect endangered piping plover
      Of all the shorebirds that visit Michigan, the piping plover is unique. This small, robin-size bird is the color of dry sand on its back and wings, with a white underbelly. It sports a narrow black band across its forehead, has orange-yellow legs and its very short, stout bill is orange with a black tip.

ANOTHER WALLY CAUGHT
     Dennis Prentis of Sterling Heights holds the tag from the fish he caught this week in the Wally III and Friends Fishing Contest. There are 28 more tagged fish to be caught. Prentis caught a tagged bluegill (sponsored by the Shirt Factory) on his special bait. He automatically won a $50 gas card just for catching the fish and will have a chance to win $50,000 in the Houghton Lake Tourism and Convention Bureau's special drawing, to be held at the Maple Valley Restaurant next April.
