Voters narrowly approved Houghton Lake Community Schools' bond issue proposal the second time around in Tuesday's primary election, and all three county-wide tax proposals passed handily. With more than 5,300 customers coming through the door at the Limberlost Saturday, Bud Bash 2008 was the biggest ever, according to Limberlost owner Bob Hallauer. But while most of the guests had a good time during the event, State Police reported a higher number of arrests than last year during the event that includes a large party on Houghton Lake. More...

An 18-year-old Roscommon man was arrested after he allegedly shoplifted nearly $261 worth of merchandise at the Houghton Lake Wal-Mart Aug. 3. A Wal-Mart loss control employee told Roscommon County Sheriff's deputies he watched as the man took computer games and hid them on a shelf in the shoe department. More...
Judge Daniel L. Sutton recently arraigned the following in 83rd District Court, Roscommon: Mark L. Gross, 35, Prudenville, waived preliminary examination and was bound over to 34th Circuit Court on two counts of maintaining a drug house and one count of delivery/manufacture of marijuana. Houghton Lake Resorter Associate Publisher Patricia Bilbo Hamp, 63, of Prudenville, died Aug. 6, 2008 at Bay Area Regional Medical Center, Bay City, following a short illness. Funeral services will be held Aug. 14 at 11 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church with Rev. William C. Winter officiating. Visitation will be held Aug. 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Christler Funeral Home, Prudenville Chapel. Burial will be in Roscommon Township Cemetery. Roscommon High School graduate Jenn Gaylor has been selected as one of 128 players to participate in the W-League Combine from Sept. 4-7 in Tampa for the new WPS (Women's Professional Soccer) League. Gaylor, a standout at Roscommon who graduated in 2001, will attend the tryout to try to make one of seven teams. More...

Historical Village Days
VILLAGE DANCE Historical Village Days visitors, led by storyteller Genot Picor, participate in a type of dance that would have been common among French settlers in Michigan during the 1700's. This year's Village Days surpassed last year's event in both visitors and money raised to help keep the organization operating. Violet Gonzales, president of the HLAHS, said more than 1,700 visitors came to Village Days this year, and over 550 badges were sold. She said more than 130 guests showed up for Friday night's pig roast. More...
Gerrish-Higgins School District Public Library
More than 60 youngsters between the ages of 1 and 10 participated in the summer reading program at the Gerrish-Higgins School District Public Library during June and July. Diane Workman, the library's youth coordinator, said "Catch the Reading Bug" was this year's theme. Monday and Tuesday featured stories, mostly about insects. More...
