Kristoff pleads to two counts in hit and run

A Houghton Lake Heights man entered pleas in 34th Circuit Court, Roscommon, Tuesday, in connection with the Feb. 28 accident that killed Nora Wills, 53, Houghton Lake, and her two dogs.

Richard Kristof, 56, pleaded guilty to failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death, and an amended count, negligent homicide. A charge of driving while intoxicated, causing death, was dismissed.

Wills, wearing a dark jacket and gray sweat pants, had been walking her dogs on M- 55, near Logan Avenue, headed east. Kristof, who was arrested the same evening, told investigators he saw what he thought was a dog in the curb lane and swerved to avoid the dog, but struck it and then drove west to his home in the Heights.

Kristof faces up to five years in prison for the failure to stop charge and up to two years in prison on the negligent homicide charge. Sentencing is set for Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. in Circuit Court.
