Nineteen percent of registered voters voted in primary

Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land recently announced that 1.36 million voters cast ballots in the Aug. 5 primary election, based on unofficial returns.

"I'd like to congratulate and thank all of the residents who took the time to participate in the primary," Land said. "In voting, they helped choose leaders and decide issues of importance in their communities. Through their individual acts of good citizenship, they have together advanced the great cause of democracy."

The primary turnout represents 19% of Michigan's 7.2 million registered voters.

"The number of voters turning out for the August primary, while on par with prior years, only represents a fraction of those registered," Land said. "As we now look forward to November's general election, my department will continue to seek ways to encourage more people to take part."

In Roscommon County, 5,672 voters cast ballots.

Land also commended local election officials and workers for their tireless efforts to prepare for and administer the primary election. Unofficial primary election results are available at www.Michigan.gov/sos. Information on the November general election can be found at www.michigan.gov/vote.
