(Above) Dan Elsholz of the Merritt Area Fire Department mans the controls on a fire engine during a blaze at an unoccupied Missaukee County home Monday night. The Merritt Area Fire Department was dispatched to the fire on East Cadillac Road and Jeffs Road in Butterfield Township at 8:07 p.m. Heavy smoke and flames were visible when firefighters arrived, and firefighters from Merritt, Falmouth and McBain fire departments from Missaukee County as well as firefighters from Roscommon and Lake Townships had the fire put out four and a half hours later. Missaukee County EMS provided medical treatment to firefighters due to the heat and strenuous conditions. Most of the damage caused by the fire occurred in the upstairs and attic area of the vacant home. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Missaukee County Sheriff's Department and the Michigan State Police Fire Investigator. More...

Judge Daniel L. Sutton recently arraigned the following in 83rd District Court: Dustin M. Gamboa, 27, Houghton Lake, waived preliminary examination and was bound over to Circuit Court where he pleaded guilty to possession of less than 25 grams of methadone. The Roscommon County Sheriff's Department made the July 29 arrest. Bond was set at $2,500. More...
