Residents may dispose of hazardous waste Saturday
      Roscommon County's fall household hazardous waste collection date has been set for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the Roscommon County Health and Human Services Building. The site is 1 1/2 mile north of the M-55/M-18 intersection in Prudenville.

PUBLIC SAFETY DAY
     The Richfield Township Public Safety Department narrowly defeated TV 9 & 10 News in two softball games during Public Safety Day at the Richfield Township Park Aug. 23. The afternoon began with a helicopter marshmallow drop, in which children collected marshmallows on the township airport and exchanged them for candy. Other activities included a bake sale, silent auction, hot dogs and disc jockey music by Brownfields. Money raised during the event will be used for the public safety department's K-9 unit. FAMILY NIGHT FUNDS
     Bill Luck (left), store director at Glen's Market in Roscommon, presents Emil Meissner, a member of the Michigan Firemen's Memorial Festival Committee, with a $1,500 donation for the festival's Family Night, scheduled for Sept. 18. Meissner said this year's expanded Family Night a fire safety show by Max the Dog, a demonstration by the Roscommon County Sheriff's Department K-9 unit and a magic show by Ron Alan of the Mystic Cove. The Glen's donation will pay for dinner, with the Roscommon- Higgins Lake Lions Club grilling the hot dogs. Desserts will be donated and served by Fun-O-Rama of St. Clair Shores and Edward Jones Investments of Roscommon. Wal-Mart of Houghton Lake also is a major sponsor of the event. (RP)

'Kitchen Ladies' dance their way into St. Helen hearts
      The Aug. 22 dance at the St. Helen Senior Center featured the "Kitchen Ladies," Kathy Jernigan, Jan Waltz, Marilee Almos and Rosemary Hiner. Elizabeth Dunaj, center manager, said the ladies "came out of the kitchen dolled up in their aprons and hair nets, marching around, playing their kazoos and throwing bead necklaces to everyone.

Commissioners to meet on ORV rules
      The Roscommon County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing Sept. 10 to discuss a county-wide ORV ordinance. The meeting will commence at 10:05 a.m. in the Board of Commissioner's Chambers, 500 Lake St., Roscommon.

Klein to repeat Paradise to Hell walk for Hospice
      Eighty-nine-year-old Clayton Klein of Fowlerville will begin his fourth annual Walk From Paradise to Hell Saturday. He will begin his 2008 trek in Paradise and end it in Hell, 355 miles to the south. Once again he will walk to benefit Michigan Hospice programs. Fellow walkers are welcome to join Klein for any distance.

Volunteers to clean up Au Sable Saturday
      To keep the Au Sable clean for all to enjoy, the Au Sable Big Water Preservation Association and Huron Pines AmeriCorps are co-sponsoring a clean-up this Saturday. Volunteers will meet in Mio and clean downstream to Alcona Pond on Sept. 6.

MMCC barbecue, car show Sunday
      Mid Michigan Community College will hold its 16th annual Barbecue and Fall Festival Sept. 7 from noon to 4 p.m. A Timber Trail Trot 5k run/walk at 10 a.m. and a Cruis'n Classics - Fall Festival Classic Car and Motorcycle Show is also scheduled. In addition to entertainment, raffles and health fair, pork barbecue with side dishes will be served.

FUN RUN PROCEEDS
     Laura Schmid-Tyler, PA-C (left), presents a check representing $5,514 to JoJean Thompson, director of Artesia Youth Park, Aug. 28. All but $1,000 (which was donated by Mid Michigan Health Park) of the donation was a result of the second annual Fun Run held in June in Lyon Township, which Schmid-Tyler organized. Also, an anonymous person donated two BMX bikes and two static bikes for the park as well. Thompson said the money will be used for the mortgage on the park property. (CHP)
