Carey leads Bucks in shutout victory over visiting Cadillac
      Grant Carey recorded his fourth shutout of the year in what Coach Mark Dalak called the "biggest" win of the season for his Roscommon High School varsity soccer squad Tuesday night. The Bucks topped visiting Cadillac, 2-0. Carey recorded seven saves and "made some unbelievable diving fingertip saves" during the win.

Reed records ace at White Deer
      at White Deer Country Club Aug. 26 when he aced the 157- yard eighth hole. Reed used a driver and a Pinnacle golf ball to hit the shot. It was witnessed by Ron Reed, Pam Reed and Mike Kenley. Greg Reed has a cabin at Houghton Lake.

Catching bugs aids AuSable
      About 20 volunteers dove into the task of collecting aquatic insects and other invertebrates on Sept. 6 as part of a project that will help monitor the health of the upper AuSable River watershed.

THREE GENERATIONS WALK BRIDGE
     Houghton Lake's Melvin Fulcher, 76, walked the Mackinac Bridge for the first time this past Labor Day, and he shared the experience with his daughter, Diane Atiyeh, 51, and grandson, Darren Atiyeh, 13, both of Novi. Fulcher said he spent the summer getting ready for the walk, recording six miles a day in preparation. He said the best part of the walk was being with his daughter and grandson, who he also taught how to waterski. In fact, Fulcher said the trio still waterskis together on Houghton Lake each summer. Small game opens Monday
      Hunting season shifts into a higher gear Sept. 15, as squirrels, rabbits, hares and ruffed grouse become fair game statewide. Department of Natural Resources officials say conditions are right for a good season. Rabbit and squirrel are numerous almost statewide. Hunters who were successful last year are likely to find good hunting in the same general areas, the DNR says.

Bobcat miscues open door for Viking win
      Missed scoring opportunities by Houghton Lake and big plays by Grayling resulted in a 22-8 nonconference Bobcat loss Sept. 5 at Grayling. "I thought we were good enough to win," Bobcat Head Coach Floyd Carter said. "We made a few crucial mistakes that prevented that from happening.

Unity Christian whips Bucks
      The trip north was worth it for the Hudsonville Unity Christian varsity football team as the Crusaders topped Northern Michigan host Roscommon 49-0 on Sept. 6. Unity Christian, located southwest of Grand Rapids, made the 320-mile round-trip for a doubleheader of varsity and junior varsity football action, taking both contests.

Two losses follow Bobcat win
      After scoring three goals in a win over Clare Sept. 3, Houghton Lake's varsity soccer squad was then shut-out in losses to Gladwin and Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian. HL 3, Clare 2 Sophomore Bo Bradley scored a hat trick and Houghton Lake rode a 1-0 lead at the half to a 3-2 Northern Michigan Soccer League win at Clare Sept. 3.

SECOND GENERATION RACERS MERRITT POINTS CHAMPS
     Two second generation race car drivers from Houghton Lake took the points championships in their classes at Merritt Speedway this season. Tyler Hacker, 16, son of Russ Hacker, won the top spot in the Teen Bees class and Dick Stout Jr. was the points champion in the Pro Truck class. Bucks start title defense with pair of JPC wins
      Roscommon began its defense of the Jack Pine Conference volleyball crown with back-to-back league wins last week. The Bucks topped Meridian Sept. 3 and Farwell Monday night. STING MUSTANGS Boosted by 12 team aces, the host Bucks topped Meridian in three straight games, 25-21, 25- 16 and 25-13.

Beavers top host Bobcats in JPC volleyball contest
      Beaverton spoiled Houghton Lake's home opener Monday night with three wins against the Houghton Lake varsity volleyball squad. The Beavers won the Jack Pine Conference match-up, 25- 14, 25-12 and 25-13. "We came out very flat and were never able to pick up the intensity and play as a team," Coach Laura McNeill said.

Junior Bucks beat Farwell in two matches
      Roscommon's junior varsity volleyball squad defeated Farwell 25-12 and 25-14 to win their home match with the Eagles Monday. Roscommon coach Angie Dalak said freshman setter Dallas James "stepped up her game with great serving and setting very well.

Bobcat Boosters to meet Sunday
      The Houghton Lake Bobcat Boosters will hold its monthly meeting Sunday at the Houghton Lake High School library. The meeting will start at 6 p.m. and those attending should park behind the school near the baseball fields and enter through the back doors.

      With an 8-0 victory over McBain Northern Michigan Christian's varsity soccer team Monday Roscommon's soccer team notched its 8th season victory with no losses. The Bucks played the Comets on Roscommon's field. "We played our best game of the year so far," Coach Mark Dalak said. "Everything came together and every single player was great today.

Jaguars start season with two wins, three losses
      The Houghton Lake Jaguar Youth Football program started play Sept. 6 with two wins and three losses. In the 3rd/4th grade division, the Houghton Lake Team 1 lost to Gladwin 2 by a score of 14-13 while the HL 2 squad won 27-2 against Gladwin (3).
