Denton Township Firefighter Joe Rubino directs the blast from a gasoline powered fan through the doorway of the American Legion Post at Houghton Lake Wednesday morning after employees opening the building around 9:15 a.m. found it was full of smoke. Assistant Fire Chief Earl Jones said the smoke appeared to have been caused by burning dust in the forced air heating system, which had been turned on for the first time in the past few months. He said the problem, which resulted in no damage to the building, could have been avoided if the furnaces had been cleaned before they were turned on. (Photo by Thomas Reznich) More...

Roscommon's Tom Richardson snapped this photo of a group of turkey vultures roosting in a tree off M-18 just north of Roscommon. He commented that it made him think of the "Addams Family" Christmas tree. He said it was the third time he had seen the birds in the tree, "apparently sunning themselves in the early morning sun." Judge Daniel L. Sutton recently arraigned the following in 83rd District Court: Jesse L. Baker, 19, Prudenville, waived preliminary examination and was bound over to Circuit Court. Baker pleaded guilty to resisting and obstructing a police officer and will be sentenced in Circuit Court. The Roscommon Sheriff's Department made the July 15 arrest. Bond was set at $20,000. More...

Grant Carey recorded his fourth shutout of the year in what Coach Mark Dalak called the "biggest" win of the season for his Roscommon High School varsity soccer squad Tuesday night. The Bucks topped visiting Cadillac, 2-0. Carey recorded seven saves and "made some unbelievable diving fingertip saves" during the win. More...
Merry K. Felk is the owner/president of Needy Not Greedy, a new not-for-profit resale store at 6203 West Houghton Lake Dr. (M-55) at Houghton Lake. Felk said money raised through sales is used to help the needy in the community and to put together "care and share" packages for U.S. armed services members overseas. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 10 to 8 Friday and Saturday. Needy Not Greedy accepts donations of household items, furniture and vehicles, which can be dropped off or picked up. Rollin and Ethel (née Yorty) Yorty of Higgins Lake will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary Sept. 15, 2008, at their home. Wed in 1948, the Yortys were married on the shores of Higgins Lake. Before settling down in Michigan, they lived in Pennsylvania, Missouri and California. More...
Rosie Bloos of Houghton Lake was surprised to find petunias growing from a crack in the sidewalk outside her rental unit at the rear of e-Byte Computer. She grows a variety of cactus in pots because of the concrete surrounding her door, but did not plant the annuals. "I call them my little miracle flowers," she said.
