The Houghton Lake Resorter earned four awards in the Michigan Press Association's 2008 Better Newspaper Contest. Competing in Weekly Class C (circulation 4,001 to 10,000), the Resorter received three awards for photography and one for editorial writing. More ... A $2,500 grant award was presented by the Roscommon County Community Foundation to the Commission on Aging to assist with the cost of providing "Meals on Wheels" to the elderly senior population of Roscommon County. Karen Slade, the In Home Service Coordinator, stated they are currently delivering between 400 and 500 meals per day throughout the county in addition to serving meals at the Senior Centers at Houghton Lake, St. Helen and Roscommon. She said they are averaging a 10% increase each year in the number of clients served. Kari Hampstead of Midland gets out of the way as daughter Elyse, 20 months, busily paints her pumpkin during the fifth annual Higgins Harvest Festival at the South Higgins Lake State Park Saturday. Park Ranger Larry Gutowski said the Hampsteads, which also included Kari's husband Chep and daughters Arianna and Larissa, were among campers on 189 sites, making this year's event the biggest ever. He said that an additional section of campsites was opened to accommodate this year's crowd, and that 125 sites have already been reserved for next year's weekend-long event.
