Bernard E. 'Giant' Davis Sr. Bernard E. "Giant"' Davis Sr., 88, Falmouth, died Oct. 23, 2008, in Cadillac, with his wife, Jane, at his side. A memorial service will be held Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. at Moddersville Reformed Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Moddersville Reformed Church. Arrangements were handled by Young Funeral home, Lake City. Mr. Davis was born in Port Clyde, ME, May 30, 1920, to Clarence and Lillian Cook Davis. A friend gave him the nickname "Giant" as a young boy, and Mr. Davis has been known by that name ever since. He and Minerva "Dolly" Johnson were united in marriage Feb. 29, 1940, in St. George, ME. The two enjoyed dancing on Saturday nights at the town hall. Mr. Davis spent his career in the lobster industry and lived on the ocean. Always eager to please his family, he spent many hours picking crab, clam and lobster meat for chowders, fritters and rolls. He and his wife spent winters in Florida until her death in 2002. He was a member of the Tenants Harbor Masonic Lodge and Rockland Lodge of Elks No. 1008. On July 5, 2003, he and Elizabeth Jane Gruenberg in Falmouth were married. The couple spent springs and falls in Michigan, winters in Florida and summers in Maine. One of their greatest joys was the six-week trip they took by train, bus, small motor boat and cruise ship. They started in Michigan and went to Vancouver, Canada, then Skagway, Fairbanks, Anchorage, Yukon and Prince of Wales Island, AK. They enjoyed visiting friends, traveling, playing cards, fishing and going garage sale-ing. Mr. Davis was especially fond of his collection of more than 2,000 watches he bargained for at lawn sales. Just days before his death, he and his wife went dancing. He also won his last game of euchre (men against the women) two days before he died. He took great pride in his family and enjoyed telling people about his son, grandchildren and great-grandchildren living in Hawaii, Michigan, Massachusetts, Maine and Mosow, Russia. Besides his first wife, he was predeceased by two sisters, Eleanor and Marjorie. Surviving are his wife, Jane of Falmouth; son, Bernard Davis Jr. and his wife Donna of Clark Island; grandchildren, Joella and her husband Alan Marriner, Bruce Davis and Chad and Dennis Cloutier; step-grandchildren, Anna Forcelle, Rory, Beth and Alyssa Wirch; and great-grandchildren, Whitney, Emily and Emma. |
