     Kim Lowell had quite a bit of sweeping to do Monday morning at Valley Sales at Houghton Lake to clear snow off used snowmobiles displayed for sale. Valley Sales owner Ron Lennox said despite the light snow cover which has lingered into the week, his snowmobile service and repair season has not yet begun in earnest, and that he is still engaged in shrink wrapping customers' boats. State Police honor son of Prudenville couple
      The son of a Prudenville couple was recently honored as 2008 Professional Emergency Manager of the Year by the Michigan State Police. Timothy McKee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold McKee, Prudenville, is emergency manager and 9-1-1 Director of Chippewa County.

Road board aids Artesia
      JR Artes ia You th Pa rk of Hought on Lake received a financial reprieve that hopefully will keep the heat on this winter. The Roscommon County Road Commission adopted a motion that returns the youth park's 2008 payment of $8,000 so the building can be heated and more fully utilized this winter.

HLHS talent show to be Dec. 3
      Houghton Lake High School will host its 19th annual talent show Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Thisyear, 18 acts are slated to perform. The entertainment varies from dances to rock bands. Admission is $3 per person. The family rate is $10 (children under the age of 10 get in for free).

Winter registration open at MMCC
      The leaves are gone and snow is on its way, but for those interested in attending Mid Michigan Community College this winter, there is still time to register for classes. Winter semester classes start on Jan. 12, but according to Kim Barnes, executive director of enrollment management at MMCC, even those who have not been admitted to the college can make the deadline.

Officials announce art grants; application workshop planned
      The Region 19 Mini-grant program of the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs is again lending a helping hand to support creative endeavors, as officials recently announced the award recipients for the first round of fiscal year 2009.

Merritt church site of blood drive
      An American Red Cross blood drive will be held. Dec. 4 at Merritt Butterfield United Methodist Church. The drive will be held from 1 to 5:45 p.m. Call (231) 328-5895 or (231) 328-4598 for directions or to make an appointment. Non-perishable food donations will also be accepted at the drive for the Moorestown Food Pantry.

SENIOR PROJECT HELPS RIVER HOUSE
     Two Roscommon High School seniors adopted River House, Inc., as their senior project, and the partnership led to a big benefit for the shelter. The students, Stephanie Mitchell and Jaina Schank, completed the agency's volunteer training and volunteered their time working with the children in the shelter and the pair also organized a coin drive at the high school which raised $582 for the shelter. "What an inspiration these girls are. They truly put their hearts and a lot of hard work into this project," said Kriss Goodroe, executive director at River House, an agency which serves survivors of domestic and sexual violence and homelessness in Crawford, Oscoda, Ogemaw and Roscommon Counties. "We are also very thankful for the generosity of all the students at Roscommon High School." SIGN OF THE SEASON
     Mike Looney of the Roscommon Department of Public Works hangs a winter banner and Christmas garland on a lamp post at the corner of Lake and Fourth Streets Monday. Looney said 57 posts would receive banners, and more than 100 will have garland. Roscommon's Christmas in the Village celebration is scheduled for Dec. 6. (RP)
