Area buck poles see mixed opening day
      A cold, wet beginning to the firearms deer season in Roscommon County appeared to produce mixed results as hunters brought their bucks to area buck poles on opening day. The best turnout was at the Buck Pole of Fred's of Roscommon, where 23 bucks were hung Nov. 15.

DNR urges hunters to shoot wild pigs
      The Michigan departments of Agriculture and Natural Resources are urging hunters to shoot feral swine and reminded them to report any sightings. Feral swine are free-ranging wild pigs, not owned by any person. During the 2007-2008 hunting season, 65 feral swine were taken by Michigan hunters.

UP BUCK
     Pete Injasoulian, Houghton Lake, shot this 7-point buck the evening of opening day at his hunting camp in the Upper Peninsula. Hunting with his buddies, he used a .270 Ruger to bag the approximately 140-pound deer. (CHP)

EAB quarantine area revised, includes entire lower peninsula
      TheMichigan Department of Agriculture (MDA) last week revised its Emerald Ash Borer quarantine to consolidate all 68 contiguous counties of the Lower Peninsula into one quarantine level - effective immediately. MDA, however, is asking travelers not to move firewood to help prevent the artificial spread of other exotic and devastating insects like Gypsy Moth.
