County names 911 chief Roscommon County Commissioners Tuesday approved a three-year contract as the county's 911 director with Montmorency County Undersheriff and 911 Director Patricia Wiley. Last week, Jim Lippert of the 911 authority board told commissioners his board recommended hiring Wiley after interviewing six of the 30 applicants for the position. Wiley, who lives in Crawford County near Roscommon, has been in her Montmorency County position nearly three years. She was a dispatcher, deputy and undersheriff during 22 years with the Arenac County Sheriff's Department and was a sheriff's deputy in Oscoda County for one year. The contract approved by commissioners will take effect Sept. 22. The contract sets a salary of $45,000 for the first year, $47,000 for the second year and $49,000 for the third year. Commissioner Marc Milburn said the contract will save county taxpayers money. John Bawol, who left the position in August, had salaries of $40,602 as 911 director and $13,799 as emergency management director. He resigned after commissioners offered him a contract with a salary of $51,099 as 911 director only. At Tuesday's meeting, Milburn urged his fellow commissioners to act "quickly" to name a new emergency preparedness director. He recommended a starting salary of $6,000. He said the county should advertise again for applicants because the original job posting, which attracted 20 responses, did not specify the position is part-time.
Robin Seymour, administrative assistant to commissioners, said State Police have suggested Roscommon and another county share an emergency management director. Commissioner Bob Schneider said Chairman Larry Mead, who is acting emergency management director, and Vice-chairman Ed Nellist should make a recommendation on the salary and whether to re-advertise the position.
