Big Rapids tops Bucks in overtime Roscommon's varsity soccer squad suffered its first loss of the season as Big Rapids topped the Bucks in the teams' annual President's Cup match, 2-1, in overtime. The host Cardinals now have a 4-1 record against the Bucks since the teams started playing the annual contest, which Buck Coach Mark Dalak created in conjunction with the Big Rapids coach, with whom he used to play and coach. "It's always a close, great game but lately we have been on the losing end," Dalak said. "We even lost to Big Rapids two years ago when we went to the State finals. They are a tough team to beat and run a solid program down there. This game is great for us because it shows us what we need to do to be successful in postseason play." Roscommon jumped to a 1-0 lead when Cody Barnes scored a goal off a corner kick by Nicolas Aretakis within the first minute of the game. The Cardinals evened the score just before the half. It wasn't until overtime that either team would score again as Big Rapids scored the winning goal in extra time. Grant Carey had a "great game" in the net, saving nine shots. "We had a good game and I felt we had more opportunities to score than they did but we just didn't capitalize," Dalak said, noting they out-shot the Cardinals two to one. "Big Rapids played us tough for 90 minutes and we answered the challenge. However, we are not used to that type of intensity. We had some beautiful shots off the post and some balls that rolled across the face of their goal. We have to finish those types of plays to be successful." Roscommon 8, Fairview 0 The Bucks responded to their first loss of the season with an 8-0 home mercy win over Fairview Monday night. Barnes had three goals and an assist to lead Roscommon. It was the 40th goal in 14 games for Barnes this season, an average of 2.86 goals per game. Carey also recorded his seventh shut-out of the season and was boosted by two goals and an assist by Matt Stone, one goal and three assists by Nicolas Aretakis, one goal each from Bryce Silagy and Marcus Jean-Francois and an assist by Tommy Seames. The Bucks beat the Eagles 3-0 the first time they met this season and Dalak said his squad didn't think they played too well in that contest. "We wanted to change that here at home." "Our field is slightly larger than theirs so we knew we'd be able to play our game and spread out the field," Dalak said. "Our passing was a little off but we have had a busy week." The Bucks improved to 10-0 in the Northern Michigan Soccer League with the victory. Roscommon 8, Burt Lake NMC 0 Prior to playing Big Rapids, Barnes had five goals and two assists to lead Roscommon to an 8- 0 home win over Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Sept. 18. Grant Carey recorded his sixth shut-out of the season while Aretakis added one goal and four assists, Matt Stone had one goal, Marcus Jean-Francois had one goal and Colin Lake had an assist. Dalak said sweeper Nick Severance and the defense shut the Eagles down all game, not giving Burt Lake anything in our defensive third. "My guys came out ready to play and made things happen through positioning and hard work," Dalak said. "When we play like that we are a fun group to watch. I am very pleased with our performance."
The Bucks are 13-1 overall and remain undefeated in NMSL play. They travel to Forest Area on Friday and host Cheboygan Saturday.
