Gladwin troupe to present 'The Gin Game' Oct. 9-11 "The Gin Game" by D. L. Coburn will be presented by Gladwin Area Friends of the Theatre Oct. 9-11 at 8p.m. Tickets are $10 per person. The production is directed by Yvette Keast and stars Alan Hawley and Eileen Roan. The winner of the 1978 Pulitzer Prize, the play originally starred Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronin. It was revived in 1999 with Julie Harris and Charles Durning and also starred Mary Tyler Moore and Dick VanDyke. The play uses a game as a metaphor for life. Weller Martin is playing solitaire on the porch of a seedy nursing home. Enter Fonsia Dorsey, a prim, self-righteous lady. They discover they both dislike the home and enjoy gin rummy, so they begin to play and to reveal intimate details of their lives. Fonsia wins every time, and their secrets become weapons they use against one another. Weller longs for a victory to counter a lifetime of defeats, but it doesn't happen. He leaves the stage a broken man, and Fonsia realizes her self-righteous rigidity has led to an embittered, lonely old age. The New York Times called it "a thoroughly entertaining lesson in the fine art of theatrical finesse..." The performance is for a mature audience and contains strong language. The directors said the language is pertinent to the authentication of the production, and it will be performed unedited. Tickets are on sale in Gladwin at Gladwin Pharmacy, City Hall, Lyle Flowers, The Medicine Shoppe, Chamber of Commerce and Village Flowers and Gifts.
