March has plenty for cage fans

March means basketball Districts and fans will no doubt get their fill in the upcoming weeks as both girls and boys basketball squads compete for a chance to advance in the state playoffs.

Houghton Lake ended its girls basketball season Monday night with a District opening loss to Standish-Sterling Central at Houghton Lake but play will continue Wednesday at Houghton Lake and the District final is slated for 7 p.m. on Friday.

Roscommon girls basketball squad played Wednesday night against Petoskey in Petoskey. Should the Bucks win, they will play in the District final in Petoskey on Friday night against the winner of the Elk Rapids/Cheboygan game. Tip-off Friday night is 7 p.m.

While no Regional girls basketball games are scheduled at Houghton Lake, the gym will host girls Class B quarterfinals on March 17. Girls basketball semifinals and finals will be played at Eastern Michigan University's Convocation Center in Ypsilanti.

Boys basketball Districts start next week. Both Houghton Lake and Roscommon will be in action on March 11.

At Beaverton on March 11 at 6 p.m., the Bobcats will face the winner of the Ogemaw Heights/Tawas game played March 9. The District final game is slated for March 13 at 7 p.m. Other teams battling in the tourney include Gladwin, Beaverton and Standish-Sterling.

Roscommon will travel to Cheboygan for District play on the boys side. The Bucks will face the winner of the Petoskey/ Elk Rapids game played March 9. Roscommon's game will be March 11 at 7 p.m. with the District final on March 13 at 7 p.m. Other teams in the District include Cheboygan and Grayling.

The winners of both the Cheboygan and Beaverton Districts will travel to Houghton Lake for Regional play against the winners from the Benzie Central and Menominee Districts. Regional play is slated for March 16 and 18.

Following Regional play, Houghton Lake High School will host boys Class B Quarterfinal play on March 24 with the winner of the Frankemuth Regional facing the Houghton Lake Regional champion.
