HLCS official student count down by 23

Student enrollment in Houghton Lake Community Schools is down by about 23 students since last fall's count. The February count, unaudited by COOR Intermediate School District, shows that the fulltime equivalency (FTE) is 1,651.27, down 23.77 from 1,675.04.

At Collins Elementary, the FTE from Feb. 11 was 419, plus 22 Preprimary Impaired students. Houghton Lake Middle School's FTE was 415.22, and Houghton Lake High School's FTE was 666 (including eighth graders).

At Second Chance Academy, the FTE was 21.91, and the Alternative Education program total was 107.14.

FTEs measure students' time in class. For example, Our Lady of the Lake School students who attend a partial day at the middle school for band class are not counted as full FTEs.

Business Manager Matt Lewis said the 23.77 change in FTE was the smallest September-to-February drop in the last four years.
