James E. Mahoney

James E. Mahoney, 73, Roscommon, died May 5, 2009, at St. Joseph Hospital, Tucson, AZ.

Father Anthony Citro will officiate a service Saturday, May 16, at 11 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church, Roscommon. Walsh Funeral Home, Roscommon, handled arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Roscommon County Community Foundation to the James E. Mahoney Memorial Fund.

Mr. Mahoney was born in Standish Sept. 30, 1935, the son of Charles James and Helen Monica (Stawowy) Mahoney. He had lived in Roscommon for more than 50 years, coming from Rogers City and Standish. He and Susan M. Venus were united in marriage Nov. 30, 1957, in Redford.

Mr. Mahoney was a choir teacher at Roscommon High School for more than 30 years, and retired in 1989. He was founder and former director of the Mikenauk Chorale and former music minister for St. Michael Catholic Church. He was a member of the Michigan Vocal Educators Association and the High School Teachers Association.

His parents preceded him in death.

Surviving are his wife, Sue of Roscommon; four children, Shawn and his wife Joanne Mahoney of Rockford, Liz and her husband Bernie Milnes of Roscommon, Melissa and her husband Bruce Rokicki of Rochester Hills, and Tim and his wife Linda Mahoney of Malmo, Sweden; four grandchildren, Patrick and Aaron Mahoney, Megan and Matthew Milnes (and future grandson, Charles Mahoney); two brothers, Ron and his wife Donna Mahoney of Houston, TX, and Jerry and his wife Wendy Mahoney of Hallowell, ME; and sister, Marilyn and her husband Ed Lau of Iron River.
