Andrew J. 'Dane' Neilson

Andrew J. "Dane" Neilson, 79, Merritt, died June 29, 2009, at Grayling Mercy Hospital.

A service is scheduled for 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at the Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake Chapel, with Pastor Wayne VanDuinen officiating. Visitation was scheduled Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be in Stittsville Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Mr. Neilson was born July 1, 1929, in Cutcheon, to the late Andrew K. and Lorette (Sinkler) Neilson. He spent all of his life in the Merritt area, where he farmed and raised Belgian draft horses. He was well known around the state and Midwest for his many years of breeding the registered horses. He was a member of the Michigan Draft Horse Association and the Belgian Draft Horse Corporation of America.

He and Avis J. VanBrocklin were united in marriage Feb. 14, 1952, in Morley. His wife preceded him in death.

Also predeceased were his two daughters, Dana and Susan; five sons, Fred, Andy, Walter, Raymond and Clark; sister, Louise Boynton; and two brothers, Grover Nowlin and Devere Nowlin.

Surviving Mr. Neilson are his daughter, Anita and her husband Russ Ensing of Houghton Lake; two granddaughters, Kasie and Chelsi; and several nieces and nephews.
