Relay's observance Being the 25th anniversary of the Relay for Life this year's theme of Happy Birthday is appropriate not only for recognizing the longevity of Relay, but also for the happiness that can be shared from sometimes sorrowful circumstances. Relay for Life helps raise funds for the American Cancer Society, and for its mission of research and education for cancer patients as well as survivors. Many who attend Relay ceremonies are doing so in memory of a loved one who was a victim of cancer, but there is shared joy for those fortunate to have survived. When Dr. Gordy Klatt began his crusade against cancer as a colorectal surgeon, his mission was to help raise funds for his local American Cancer Society, but his mission was also to support those who had battled cancer. His story is one of perseverance...a marathon that stretched for 24 hours and covered 83 miles while raising $27,000. That inspiration has helped many others in their marathons for life cancer free. The educational component of Relay is also important. Seeing survivors of cancer, estimated to be over 800 in Roscommon County, or about 4% of the county's population, physically demonstrates that cancer can be beaten. But, education is the key. Knowing what cancer is, and what can contribute to its causes can help individuals take preventative measures. Survivors also give others hope, those recently diagnosed with cancer can become inspired to wage their own personal battle. While raising funds for the American Cancer Society may be its main purpose Relay's influence builds cohesion within a community. The bonds of survival and the tears of sorrow are shared, an understanding evolves from both. The planned activities will keep those who wish to maintain a festival pace for 24 hours plenty busy, and there are selective activities that should appeal to a variety interests. While the crowd for the pajama and favorite stuffed animal lap at 3 a.m. might appeal to a few of the younger crowd the more traditional laps will probably be more popular... anyone for the "bad hair and noise makers lap at 5 a.m.?" |
