FROM ROTARY TO RELAY

The Houghton Lake Rotary Club recently donated $1,000 to the 2009 Relay for Life Roscommon County, and the Houghton Lake High School Interact Club donated $100 toward the 24-hour event. The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life celebrates its 25th year in 2009. Relay Chairperson Pat Kronberg explained to Rotary members that Relay for Life began in Tacoma, WA, in the mid-1980s. Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma colorectal surgeon, wanted to enhance the income of his local American Cancer Society office and to show support for all of his patients who had battled cancer. In May 1985, Klatt spent 24 hours circling the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, running more than 83 miles. Throughout the night, friends donated $25 to run or walk with Klatt for 30 minutes. His first efforts raised $27,000.
