Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing for free this weekend With plenty of snow on the ground, there's never been a better time to give cross-country skiing or snowshoeing a try, and you can do that for free during 2009 Winter Trails this Saturday. Two area locations will provide the necessary equipment and assistance and many include short nature hikes and other activities. CROSS COUNTRY SKI HEADQUARTERS Activities will take place from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Cross Country Ski Headquarters, 9435 North Cut Road (Co. Rd. 100), Higgins Lake, an anchor site for the 14th annual Winter Trails. Registration and free outfitting in snowshoes, boots, skis and poles begin at 10 a.m. At 10:30, a cross-country ski and snowshoe clinic will offer instruction in how to get the skis and snow shoes on, how to hold the poles and how to start cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. It also includes learning how to fall down and how to get up. At 11 a.m., participants will go on a tour to Trappers Cabin for hot dogs, bonfire and hot cocoa, all at no charge. After a rest at the cabin, skiers and snowshoers will be able to choose to go on their own and explore more trails or be guided back to Cross Country Ski Headquarters. Skiers will return from their tours at 3 p.m. and return snowshoes, boots, skis and poles. They may relax in front of the fireplace in the Stone Turtle Day Lodge. Registrants' names will be drawn from a hat for prizes furnished by equipment manufacturers. Cross Country Ski Headquarters has a limited number of skis and snowshoes available for the event. To confirm availability, preregister by sending an e-mail with your name, address, age and shoe size to: skibones@aol.com. For information, call (800) 832 2663 or visit www.crosscountryski. com. HARTWICK PINES STATE PARK Winter Trails hours at Hartwick Pines State Park on M-93, two miles east of I-75, exit 259, Grayling, will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Snowshoeing equipment and instruction will be available at the Michigan Forest Visitor Center, so advance registration is recommended. In addition to free snowshoe rental, activities will include guided snowshoe hikes; clinics on winter wildlife; winter fitness, survival and first aid; children's activities and free giveaways. The Cross Country Ski Shop in Grayling is helping sponsor the event by providing snowshoes for the day's activities. Food concessions, hot beverages and two campfires to warm-up will be available. To learn about Winter Trails Day and register on-line, visit www.wintertrails. org. Information also is available by contacting the park at (989) 348-2537 or by e-mail: burgr@michigan.gov. Cross Country Ski Headquarters and Hartwick Pines are among 100 locations in the U.S. and Canada that will be participating in Winter Trails this weekend. Winter Trails is presented through a partnership between SnowSports Industries America, the not-for-profit memberowned trade association representing snow and winter sports companies; the American Hiking Society, a recreationbased conservation organization that promotes and protects foot trails and the hiking experience; and Cross Country Ski Areas Association, a national organization representing Nordic centers across North America.
Learning either cross-country skiing or snowshoeing can earn points towards a President's Challenge for Active Lifestyle Award. In 2006, more than 11,000 people partook in Winter Trails and together burned 5.5 million calories per hour. The average person can burn 500 calories per hour by snowshoeing and/or cross country skiing.
