      An off-duty Crawford County Sheriff’s deputy sustained a broken leg Saturday when he was struck by the Roscommon County Sheriff’s Department airboat on Higgins Lake.

Severance named to Alma list
      Alma College has named nearly 400 students to the dean’s list for outstanding academic performance during the 2009 fall term. Students who achieve a 3.5 or better grade point average during a term, while carrying a minimum of 13 credits, at least eight of which are evaluative grades, are named to the dean’s list.

County board awards contract for spring gypsy moth spraying
      Roscommon County Commissioners Wednesday accepted a bid of $22.84 per acre for spraying 20,595 acres of land in the county for gypsy moths this spring.

Early numbers show enrollment down
      Preliminary enrollment figures from the Feb. 10 pupil count day in Michigan schools show a drop in attendance at both Roscommon Area Public Schools and Houghton Lake Community Schools. In the Roscommon district, the February head count of 1,497 is down from the fall count by 29 students.

School Based Health Centers providing care in county
      As declared by Governor Jennifer Granholm, February is School Based Health Center Awareness Month. Roscommon County has two such centers, one at Roscommon Middle School and the other at Houghton Lake High School. MidMichigan Health Services opened its first center in May, 2006, at Houghton Lake High School. By February, 2007, it had opened the center at Roscommon Middle School.

Adoptable Pets
      Last week was another good week for featured pets, Mr. Piggie and Gabe found homes. Joe Boxer and Mistletoe are biding their time and waiting for the perfect family to come in and rescue them. I have a soft spot for bloodhounds and Maggie won me over the first time I met her. She is around 10-12 months old and has a beautiful Mahogany colored coat.
