Lady Birds end season with 59-47 loss to Macomb

The 2009-10 season came to a close for the Kirtland Community College womens basketball team with a 59-47 loss to the host Macomb Community College Monarchs on Saturday in Warren.

The Monarchs (11-13 overall, 7-9 conference) built an 11-point advantage, 31-22, by the intermission of the Michigan Community College Athletic Association Eastern Division contest, a lead the visiting Firebirds (3-24 overall, 1-15 conference) couldn’t erase in the second 20 minutes of action.

One positive for Kirtland was the play of freshman center Teri Taylor (Clare), who torched the Monarchs for a teamhigh 20 points, 16 rebounds, 5 blocked shots, 3 steals and 1 assist. Houghton Lake’s Chelsea Williams had 2 points, 3 rebounds and 1 steal.

Kirtland played a good game and for a good cause on Feb. 17, but couldn’t manage a win over the visiting Alpena Community College Lumberjacks in a clash of the two conference rivals at the McGregor Athletic Complex in Mio.

Kirtland hosted its first “Firebirds Fight Against Breast Cancer” fundraiser, with the Firebirds getting into the spirit of the event by wearing pink uniforms, instead of the traditional home whites. It was also Parent’s Night.

But it was the Lumberjacks who celebrated in the end with a hard-fought 56- 52 win over their Michigan Community College Athletic Association Eastern Division foe.

Kirtland’s chances to earn a “w” took a hit late in the first half, when starting sophomore forward Katie Shea (Clare) injured her shoulder and left the game after chipping in 4 points and 5 rebounds. And, the Firebirds lost Kristen Ormsbee (Johannesburg-Lewiston) in the second half, when she fouled out after tallying 3 points, 2 rebounds and 1 steal.

Gina Gerow (Tawas Area) was the only Firebird to score in double figures with 12 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists and 1 steal. Englehart added 9 points, 6 boards, 3 steals and 2 assists.
