Robert Brookes

Roscommon resident Robert Brookes, 67, died March 12, 2010, at Grayling Mercy Hospital.
Following his wishes, cremation has taken place and no service will be held. Walsh Funeral Home, Roscommon, handled arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the family.
Mr. Brookes was born in Detroit, Oct. 16, 1942, the son of Chester and Elsie (Wilner) Brookes. He and Joan Siegel were united in marriage Oct. 16, 1966, in Detroit. For 30 years he worked with Consumers Power Company in Livonia as a gas linesman and retired in 1997. While living in Westland the family vacationed in Roscommon from 1990 until moving there in 1997.
After moving to Roscommon he worked as a Rosco Mini-bus driver for eight years. He was also a COOR Intermediate School District bus attendant.
Mr. Brookes worked hard to support his family and enjoyed cooking special meals for his grandchildren, who especially enjoyed his breakfasts. He enjoyed playing pinochle and euchre.
An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and was known to always consume his bounty. When he was not outdoors, he watched hunting and fishing shows on the Outdoor Channel. He was also a fan of morel mushrooms, especially those picked by others. He was a dog lover and always took special care of his own dogs.
Preceding him in death were his sister, Frances Bonham and her husband Ed.
Surviving Mr. Brookes are his wife, Joan three children, Michael and his wife Catherine of Redford, Cathy Brookes and her significant other of Redford, and Mark and his wife Dawn of Roscommon; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and their grandfather, Andy Sambrone of Redford; brother-in-law, Marvin and his wife Susan Siegel of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
