105 walk 100-plus miles

Retirees Robert and Marilyn Kibbe logged the most miles among public participants in Roscommon Area Public Schools’ fitness program, “100 Miles in 100 Days–to the Bridge and Across.”

Marilyn Kibbe walked a total of 200 miles, and her husband, despite a broken collar bone, logged 190. They told organizer Gabe Williams their blood pressure “dropped significantly” while they participated in the program.

The school district opened Roscommon High School hallways Feb. 1 for fitness walking and running Monday through Thursday evenings. To make the activity more interesting, Williams, an RHS teacher, devised “To the Bridge and Across,” in which students, staff members and residents could walk or run 100 miles, the distance from Roscommon to the Mackinac Bridge, between Feb. 1 and May 11. Those who walked or run a total of 100 miles over the 100 days received free T-shirts noting their accomplishment.

Williams said 105 people walked 100 miles or more. Twelve logged more than 200 miles, and staff member Fran Jacobs reached the 300-mile mark.

“I’m just really, really pleased at what Gabe has done for our community,” RAPS Superintendent Dr. Millie Mellgren said.
