Summer reading program to kick off
June is here and soon the school doors will close, prompting a long-standing tradition, the Houghton Lake Public Library Summer Reading Program.
Registration for this year’s program, “Make a Splash, Read!” begins June 14 and offers a free, drop-in make-and-take craft for everyone who registers throughout the day. Registration will also continue throughout the program, which officially begins June 15 and lasts through July 31.
The six-week program features reading incentives and programs that promise to lure the most reluctant of readers into the library. The focus of “Make a Splash, Read!” is to encourage kids of all ages to read 15 minutes every day.
Similar to needing exercise and a well-balanced diet, a commitment to reading everyday builds lifelong readers, while preventing summer reading loss and helping children to be ready to learn in September.
The program also offers dessert in the form of fun: Mother Goose on the Loose Storytime for children up to age three; Wigglers Storytime for ages three to five; Terrific Tuesdays Book-tivities and Crafts for ages six to 11; “Few Minutes to Win It” for teams of four of all ages; “The Noiseguy,” a sound impersonator, for the whole family; “Boatloads of Fun” for the whole family; the Magic Carpet Theatre program for the whole family; and “sandcastle” building, bookmaking, recycled purse crochet class and a library regatta for various ages (check the schedule when you register).
In addition, for each day participants spend 15 minutes reading they will receive one ticket toward winning an “Airhead Wild” ski and swim tube donated by Spicer’s Boat City.
This year the library will introduce Badge-a-rama. Summer reading participants will receive a free baseball cap when they attend the comedy program, “The Noiseguy,” June 24 at 6:30 p.m, which can later be decorated with badges earned as fun activities are completed there are four badges to collect this summer.
Whether the kids are readers, almostreaders or at the read-to-me stage, the Houghton Lake Public Library has a summer reading program for you.
Summer reading adults are included, too. They may enter to win two tickets from WCMU for a two-hour cruise featuring a sunset ride under the Mackinac Bridge, a live performance from Michigan musicians and hearty hors d’oeuvres provided by Audie’s of Mackinaw City.
Stop in June 14 or any time after to register and receive an information packet and schedule of events, or call 366-9230 for details.
