RHS names coaches for varsity soccer, football

Veteran coaches have been hired to lead Roscommon High School’s varsity football and soccer teams.

RHS Athletic Director Mitch Koehn said Dan Benkert, assistant football coach at Saginaw Nouvel Catholic Central High School, will be the football Bucks’ new mentor. Benkert has been coaching for over 20 years, 10 of them at Nouvel. He also has coached at Grayling, Birch Run and Bridgeport. Koehn said Benkert has nine district titles, five regional championships, one state runner-up showing and two state championships to his credit. At Roscommon, he succeeds Don McKindles, head coach since 2001.

Replacing Mark Dalak as varsity soccer coach at RHS will be Roy Gurk, retired athletic director at Dearborn High School. He had held that position since 2003. He was head coach for Dearborn’s track, cross-country and boys’ and girls’ soccer teams between 1998 and 2009 and is former president of the City of Dearborn Youth Soccer League, where he coached for over 20 years. Koehn said Gurk plans to make his retirement home in the Roscommon area.
