Candidates to address issues in forum

The COOR Intermediate School District and Kirtland Community College are hosting a Meet the Candidate’s Night, Sept. 27, from 6:15 to 8:30 p.m. in the Kirtland Community College Auditorium.

The following candidates have been invited: Van Sheltrown (D) and Bruce Rendon (R) for House District 103; Casey Viegelahn (D), Peter Pettalia (R) and Patrick Pokorski (I) for House District 106; Roger Dunigan (D) and Darwin Booher (R) state Senate District 35 and Andy Neumann (D) and John Moolenaar (R) state Senate District 36. They are running for the state legislature and hope to represent our community when elected.

As trustees on the COOR Intermediate School District Board of Education, we invite every community member to ask questions that are of concern to us and our community.

Funding for K-12 schools and ISDs is a growing concern. Many northern Michigan districts have made cuts to programs and student services and have laid off staff. It is likely there will be more cuts to our school districts for the unforeseen future that can only result in hurting all of our students and northern Michigan communities.

All segments of our community need to attend and let the candidates know that our community and students are important and that current education funding issues must be addressed now! We strongly urge all community members to attend and hear where the candidates stand and what their priorities are on these and other community issues.

Please join us as well as these candidates for state office Sept. 27 in the Kirtland Community College auditorium.

Kelly Barton, Trustee Bob Declaire, Trustee John Rosczyk Trustee COOR Intermediate School District

Do you think pressure from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students on legislators will have an effect on gun control?
