Fifty-three youth finish snowmobile safety training

Fifty-three young snowmobilers from Roscommon, Houghton Lake, Prudenville, Grayling and Frederic completed the Rosco-Higgins Trail Cruisers annual snowmobile safety class held Dec. 11 at the CRAF Center, Roscommon.

Club President Doug Nagel welcomed the students to the event which let them see one of the club’s groomers and a couple of snowmobiles.

Instructors Chuck Comstock of Waterford and Greg Whitaker of AuGres, both members of the Snomads Snofari Club, conducted the DNR Safety Class with additional safety related information shared by guest speakers Cpl. Pinch from the Roscommon Sheriff’s Office and Mr. Ric Federau, president of Saf-TTec and director of the Soo I-500 Snowmobile Race.

Jeff Persondek, senior groomer driver, presented “groomer basics” during the event. Jackie Persondek took care of registration and lunch for those attending the class.

The goal of the training was to help youth operators become safe and responsible snowmobilers and prepare them for what they might encounter out on the trails.

The training lasted seven hours and included information on the safe operation of snowmobiles, general information on survival skills, and the laws that apply to snowmobiles. At the end of the training, all 53 students successfully completed a 50 question exam and were issued their Snowmobile Safety Certificates.
