John 'Jay' W. Span

 John “Jay” W. Span, 72, of Houghton Lake, died Feb. 17, 2011 at home with his family by his side.

Graveside services for Mr. Span will be conducted in the spring at Roscommon Twp. Cemetery, Houghton Lake. 

Born on October 3, 1938 in Clarksville, TN, he was the son of the late Dan and Ira (Crick) Span. He was married in Ferndale on April 19, 1958 to Beverly J. Boss and she preceded him in death on Oct. 11, 2010. The couple moved to Houghton Lake from Royal Oak in 1972 and he was the owner and operator of the Woodland Bar for many years.  He also worked in residential construction in the Houghton Lake area.  He was a member of the Houghton Lake Eagles. 

Mr. Span is survived by his son, Dan (Cathy Jock) Span of Houghton Lake; five grandchildren, Christina, Michael, Kayla, Meghan, and Cheyenne; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Ira; his wife, Bev; his son, John William Span Jr.; one brother, Russell Span; and one sister, Virginia Durban. 

Those wishing to make memorial donations are asked to direct them to the family.  Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake Chapel handled the arrangements.
